MySQL gets killed , no error logs linux - SOLVED swap usage

We were wondering once when MySQL server process used to get killed automatically with the below indication in /var/lib/mysql/ err log -

140826 12:12:26 mysqld_safe Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql
140826 12:12:27 mysqld_safe mysqld from pid file /var/lib/mysql/shareolite.pid ended

There was absolutely no indication on whatsoever was the cause.

Finally , on brain storming we observed , the SWAP memory was fully used up which was the culprit

$ free -m
             total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:          3830       3686        144          0        167       2381
-/+ buffers/cache:       1136       2694
Swap:         2047       2043          4

Once we rebooted the system to recover the used swap , mysql server startup was normal and continued to function normally.

Hope this tips helps to some !!

Linux Command line Search and Install perl modules from CPAN

Did you know that , perl modules may be directly installed from CPAN website. Only requirement is you have a active internet connection. In this post we show few commands which may be used on a linux system to search & download perl modules from CPAN website. This tool has an advantage that it downloads the necessary dependencies & installs them.

Step 1 : Login to the CPAN linux prompt

[shareolite@labserver 00:25:44 shareolite]$ perl -MCPAN -e shell

cpan shell -- CPAN exploration and modules installation (v1.59_54)
ReadLine support available (try 'install Bundle::CPAN')

cpan>

Step 2 : Search for the required module , For example *Excel*

cpan> i /Excel/

Module          XML::Excel      (I/IS/ISTERIN/XML-Excel-0.02.tar.gz)
Module          XML::SAXDriver::Excel (I/IS/ISTERIN/XML-SAXDriver-Excel-0.06.tar.gz)
Module          Xymon::Server::ExcelOutages (D/DA/DAVIDP/Xymon-Server-ExcelOutages-0.03.tar.gz)

Step 3 : Select the module from the list and install

cpan> install XML::Excel
Running install for module XML::Excel
Running make for I/IS/ISTERIN/XML-Excel-0.02.tar.gz
Fetching with LWP:
  http://perlmirror.indialinks.com/authors/id/I/IS/ISTERIN/XML-Excel-0.02.tar.gz

  CPAN: MD5 security checks disabled because MD5 not installed.
  Please consider installing the MD5 module.

Scanning cache /home/shareolite/.cpan/build for sizes

XML-Excel-0.02/MANIFEST
XML-Excel-0.02/Makefile.PL
XML-Excel-0.02/README
XML-Excel-0.02/test.pl

Shall I follow them and prepend them to the queue
of modules we are processing right now? [yes]

Hope this helps to some linux perl geeks.

Install Oracle linux command line silent mode

Installing oracle application software & database through command line in Linux: ( silent mode )

This may be useful when server console / Xwindows access is not available. Sample response file configuration for Standard Edition installation is provided for usage reference. Hope this helps to some geeks.

Procedure:

  • Untar the database installation tar file , this will usually create a directory "database"
  • Execute oracle  pre-installation procedure i.e, creating oracle user, groups , setting sysctl parameters etc

Edit the db_install.rsp response file as per requirement and execute the runInstaller executable in silent mode as mentioned below.

 ./runInstaller -silent -responseFile /home/oracle/database/response/db_install.rsp

Apache Tomcat Enable Access logs - SOLVED

For enabling access logs in Apache tomcat web server , following lines need to be un-commented in server.xml configuration file and restart the server process.

 <Valve className="org.apache.catalina.valves.AccessLogValve"
                 directory="logs"  prefix="localhost_access_log." suffix=".txt"
                 pattern="common" resolveHosts="false"/>

Logs with file name "localhost_access_log.<date>" will be generated under Tomcat logs directory everyday.
